My Boy

Squid is all kinds of fun these days. He’s old enough now that he “gets” my little quirks and has starting developing his own. It’s so amazing to watch a person grow into his unique self. He was just a baby, you know? I mean, to me he has always been a complex person. I saw his personality from the very beginning. Jason never really caught on to all the little things I’d notice when he was a newborn. I think he just thought of him as a “typical baby.” Now that he’s a little version of ourselves - walking and laughing and playing jokes - it’s so much more exciting for Jason. Me…I always knew he had it in him. :)

He loves to dance and make music. He watches us closely and mimics the way we blow air into the plastic flute we have. He sits down at the keyboard and experiments with the keys. He holds the toy saxophone up to his lips and smiles.

He loves making up games. He has stared to learn the art of teasing! He’ll pick up a toy, extend his arm to me and clap when I take it. But sometimes he’ll fake me out. At the last second, he’ll take his arm back, smirk and wobble away laughing.

He loves to feed the dogs. I’ll give him a piece of hamburger bun and he’ll sneak away with it. I’ll find him two minutes later in the living room tearing off pieces and methodically handing them to each of the dogs, one by one.

He’s learned how to use different types of frowns. There’s the “I wanna get my way and I’m testing you to see if you’ll cave” frown, the “Where are you? How dare you go in the other room and leave me!” frown and the “What the hell are you trying to feed me?!” frown. All of them are incredibly cute. All of them make me incredibly weak.

He loves to make me laugh. His favorite way is by holding his baby food in his mouth and grinning until I say, “Baaaaby….” Of course, this makes him giggle and whatever was in his mouth sprays onto my face. It’s the greatest thing ever.

He’s clever. He knows what things in the house he should stay away from and when he gets near them he pretends he’s looking at something else. Then, very slowly, he’ll turn around to make sure no one is watching. The problem is I always am and as soon as he catches me glaring at him he smiles and claps his hands. Then he fiddles with his fingers and casually walks away.

The fact that my little boy makes me laugh so hard every day is the best reward. I could never have wished for a better way to spend my days but being in the presence of this amazing little person!
