Just Around The Corner
We’re coming up on Squid’s first birthday and I am so excited, but also a little nervous. First of all, we are planning a party in Golden Gate Park. In April. It could either be an amazing, mind-blowing, totally awesome-beyond-words day of the most beautiful weather possible - sun shining, cool breeze floating in from the ocean, not a cloud in the sky…or….it could be the other kind of San Francisco April day that we’re not even going to talk about. Everyone out there cross your fingers for the former!
I read something, I think in Parenting magazine, about how a baby’s first birthday party should be really quiet and mellow, with like 10 people max, at home for a few hours, the end. But fuck it, this is Squid’s FIRST freakin’ party, yo! Why the hell do I want to have it at my crazy, messy house where he hangs out every other day of the year?! Where would we put the guests?

Anyway, that just sounds way too boring. Playing in the park with lots of devoted admirers sounds much better! So, now I just have to iron out the details - food, games, a cake. I can’t wait. A year already, it’s insane. I feel the same as the day I was admitted to the hospital - so thrilled and so ready to be a mom. That feeling I had when I first saw him is the same feeling I have every time I look at him. It sounds extremely sappy, but there is a reason for that. It is.

We cheated and had both first birthday parties at the grandparent’s houses. I didn’t bake the cake or anything, just showed up with the guest of honor.
Thanks for noticing my neopets button. I find it to be a fun website. I enjoy playing the games and such. I tell myself that I am doing research for when the boys get older. I will know what kinds of websites are safe for them.

Screw the quiet birthday party! I have a fairly big family so all the neices/nephews first birthdays (and every other holiday) have been total mayhem (but in a good way) and they don’t seem to scarred by it! And yes, April birthdays are tricky weatherwise (I’m an April b/day) but it’ll still be fun - don’t stress!

For a second I thought you had a picture of my living room and I was like, “hey, when did we get a dog?”
I’m with you. Enjoy that first birthday. It’s just as much a celebration of your first year of mothering as it is about what this wonderful gift you’ve been given has accomplished in that time. (It only becomes out of hand when MTV is doing “My Super Sweet First Birthday” shows and parents are scrambling to book The Wiggles because baby’s crying and saying none of their friends will like them anymore, then demanding a decked out Little Tykes Coupe Car).

my big bro lives near golden gate park! I love that place! I think when it comes to birthdays and your kids, you just need to do what you want and can do.

We have an April birthday here, too, and I’m always way to scared to have it outside. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for ya!

1. Thanks for posting on my blog, so that I could come back here and find yours! You totally crack me up!
2. I love moms who post pictures of what their house REALLY looks like!
3. You totally crack me up! (Oh, I said that already?)
4. As for the birthday party…go for HUGE! Hell, they made it through colic and the first year, and you are both still alive, right? ha! I do suggest doing it outside though if at all possible! I learned my lesson the hard way…we had my first’s first at my mother’s house where about 55 people ended up jam packed inside! People who haven’t shown up for anything in 10 years will show up for this! Keep it simple-let everybody run around and play, the serve some cake and juiceboxes, and enjoy yourself!
5. You crack me up! I’ll be back!
