Girl Night Out

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

I’ve finally come to the realization that I can’t spend every night at home. As much as I love being in the comfort of my own space - whether it be writing on my laptop, watching T.V., laying on my bed listening to music, rolling around with Squid in my living room, roaming around the kitchen sifting through recipes or whatever, I have begun to feel the itch to get out! My husband has his weekly band practice, during which he gets to go bang drums for three hours. So why not have my own night? I decided it would be Mondays.

So, I found this. I took the scenic route, purposely driving out of my way to see the city lights from the top of Portola. It hit me, coming down that hill in the soft rain, that it has been way too long since I’ve seen the city at night. Not so long ago you could have found me in any random nightclub, hailing any random taxi, downing cocktails in divey bars and smoking Marlboros outside on dimly lit sidewalks.

Oh, how my life has changed! And while, I wouldn’t give it up for a second, it felt wonderfully freeing to get away, even for just 2 hours! The bar was warm, the drink was cold, the company was great. More importantly, the company was different. The company was not my husband nor my baby!

In short, I’m definitely making Mondays my night from here on out. I forgot how important balance is. I do admit, however, that when I arrived back home, I couldn’t wait to check on Squid! He was sleeping, of course, but I just had to see him. God, I could have woken him up just so I could hug him and hear his little squeaky greeting…”Oh-Oh-Bay…AH!”

Keeping Busy

Since I don’t have anything interesting to say today, I have these for you instead. Here are some projects I’ve completed over the past few weeks. You can click on the photos for a larger view on Flickr.

This is a wool beret that I absolutely love. I made it out of Taos 100% wool yarn #15 by Crystal Palace Yarns. The yarn itself is pretty expensive, about $9.00 per skein, but well worth it! I used one skein plus a few feet from the second skein for this beret.

This is a cable knit hat made from ON line Linie 44 in Caramel and Merlot. It was a little difficult to work with due to the fact that it tends to split, but the final product is soft and totally wearable.

And finally, these are baby booties I made for a friend of a friend who is expecting a boy! I don’t even know the woman very well, but any excuse to make these…I mean, how could I refuse? They are 100% cotton - not sure the brand of the yard. Just picked it up at a local fabric store. I made the bows out of some left over ribbon I found laying around. Adorable.

Lucky Me

Would you look at this? I mean, seriously!

my mom's not totally useless with a camera after all!

Squid’s first real day at the playground. I took him when he was only a few months old, but of course he just stayed in his stroller and slept. Now he can actually swing!

swing

And slide! Or, at least stand at the edge of it!

And crawl in the grass!

And climb! Well, not quite…

Whatever he does, he looks cute doing it!

The other day while I was shopping in Mommy Mecca…you know, Target…an older lady stopped me and looked upon me and Squid. “You’re lucky,” she said and smiled.

Damn straight.

Tag, you’re it!

I have been tagged today by Dysfunctional Housewife (aren’t we all? ;) to write 10 weird facts about myself.

Normally, I would sit here and ponder over wonderful little tidbits that are not so much weird, but charming in order to avoid making myself look like a total freak. Like, “OMG, I am such a weirdo, I drink my milk with ice cubes!” Not today, chickees. I’m in a particularly rare and lovely state of I Don’t Give A Shit, so here goes.

1) I enjoy having conversations with my husband while he sits on the toilet. What can I say, he’s very focused.

2) If a recipe calls for baking soda, I take it from the open box in the refrigerator. It may or may not be expired.

3) You know the part of a baby’s umbilical cord that dries and falls off after birth? I saved it.

4) I shave my legs everyday, even when I’m on my period.

5) I have gray hair. I’m 27.

6) I complain about having big boobs, but purposely wear tight-fitting T-shirts when I want something.

7) When I find my cat’s shed claws and whiskers, I save them in case I find a spell one day that requires them.

8) I made my husband promise not to tell anyone I bought the latest Dixie Chicks album.

9) I think I have a nice ass and perfect toes.

10) I can’t, in good conscience, outfit my baby with mismatched socks. Today he’s wearing mismatched socks.

And now, I tag:

Underachieving Mommy
Coffee Slut
and
…for a different kind of girl

Have fun, ladies.

True Love

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

You crashed into my heart like a hurricane,
came into my life like love usually does
And even though I was expecting you,
you surprised me in the best possible way
Seeing you for the very first time,
unlike most loves of this world,
I knew this was Forever.

Better Times

Ugh! Squid is sick again. He has a very ugly cough and fever and the poor thing is just miserable! Which, of course, doesn’t make Mommy too happy, either. I want my laughing Squid back!

Um….

Wow. Sorry to say, I’m not surprised.

Bring Willie Home

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

As much time as I spend bemoaning the cost/maintenance/irritating habits of my pets, I’d be crushed if someone did this to any one of them:

ABDUCTED YORKIE, 13-YEAR-OLD, MALE
$1000 REWARD
Abducted 12/10/06 by a 45-50 year-old African American woman driving a 1980’s Silver 4dr-sedan (possibly a Volvo) in Pasadena, California.

If you live in Southern California and/or know of any pertaining info, please call (310)-490-3901. Or, just help spread the word and copy this post into your own blog!
